Hello, Aanii, Bonjour,
There have been a number of developments and announcements at Laurentian University over the past few weeks, and I wanted to take this opportunity to provide you with some updates. It is important that you have the benefit of accurate and current information from Laurentian itself, and that you do not simply rely on the media or third parties for information concerning your academic future.
One of the most recent developments (with a decision from the Court released at 10:00 pm on May 2, 2021) confirms the termination of Laurentian’s contracts with the Federated Universities, being Huntington University, Thorneloe University and University of Sudbury. For information on the effect of this, we would encourage you to read the news release from Laurentian. This will also provide you with information relating to Spring term courses, which will continue in the ordinary course at Laurentian but are affected with respect to Thorneloe.
Laurentian’s various faculty Deans, the Recruitment and Registrar’s offices and other academic advisors are available to assist you in your academic journey. Please do reach out to them if you have questions about the impact of any program closures, or any changes that you may wish to make at any time. We are here to assist you, and look forward to welcoming you in our Spring courses and to our Fall term commencing in September, 2021. We recognize that many of you still have questions about the availability of academic offerings at Laurentian, and we want to address those.
Notwithstanding the closure of some of our lowest-enrolment programs, Laurentian continues to offer 71 undergraduate programs, including 28 consolidated programs in French and 44 consolidated programs in English (excluding transient programs that do not lead to degrees). Laurentian also offers 33 graduate programs, including 5 in French, and 28 in English. This consolidation reflects the alignment of various program paths from amongst 100 total undergraduate programs (62 English and 38 French) that lead to distinct degrees.
The full list of those programs is included below. Students in these programs can proceed in their programs as planned.
While our academic offerings may have changed, our commitment to the student experience remains. We continue to have student services available to support the growth of our students.
The changes that we have made at the University and the many milestones that we have met in the past 3 months, which have been approved by the Court as part of our restructuring, represent the key foundational basis for our path forward into an exciting future for a revitalized Laurentian University.
We at Laurentian remain committed to helping you through the important changes happening at the University. We also continue to work with impacted students to find the best alternative programs and courses to complete their degree. We look forward to supporting you through the next step of your academic journey, whether that be in Spring/Summer courses or welcoming you back to campus in the next academic year.
Thank you, Miigwech, Merci,
Robert Haché, PhD
President and Vice-Chancellor
